RENDERINGS

Cheryl Clark Vermeulen

She will describe everything
in the room: the negative space
will be her body: the summation
of her surroundings the contours
of her faulty yet believable plan:
dust-collecting papers under the bed
from episodes of addictions to self-
analysis quizzes: to be reviewed,
analyzed, and summarized: the stacks
to explain desires, wants, interests:
lucky she got some answers before
someone started making a buck
on the internet: quack analyses and
analogies, maybe—but someone else
must tell her what she is.

Before internet quizzes drew up our characters as Egyptian goddesses, super heroes, or possibly office supply products, they would simply offer us as a color or a four-letter acronym. What other thing are we in the world?
