                              Winter light (1)

 

                    white and                     shadows

          trail the lawn


                                                  a match flare

tree shapes                                                             flicker and flail


                              clinkers in the grate

      and a gate

               yawns


                                   on its hinges

 

                    [ May night more swiftly make is way (2)

 

                                                            *

 

                    somewhere in the margins a music begins


                     (somewhere warmth)


                     we cling to what's left of life in the heart's


                     hearth
