ANATOMY OF THE NUNCHAKU

Fumio Demura, from Nunchaku: Karate Weapon of Self-Defense, 1971, Ohara Publications.

Nunchaku handles should be made from a hardwood that, like oak, loquat or pasania, is both strong and flexible. The nunchaku rope, originally made of horsehair, is now usually made of nylon or chain.

The length of the nunchaku should normally equal the distance from the middle of the hand to the elbow. However, the size of the nunchaku should also be adjusted to fit the individual's height, weight and arm power.
