EXCEPTION TO NORMAL DISTRIBUTION (RANGE SHORT—TARGET LONG)

The ROTC Manual, 12th Edition, 1928, National Service Publishing Company

Distribution of Fire by the Individual, by the Squad and by the Section. An application of the rule shows that the fire of each squad covers the entire section target beginning with the first shots, that is, each man fires his first shot at that part of the target corresponding to his position in the squad. The right flank man fires his first shot at the right edge of the target. The left flank man fires his first shot at the left edge of the target, the center man of the squad fires his first shot at the center of the target and in like manner each of the other four firing members of the squad fires his first shot at that part of the target corresponding to his position in the squad.
