FIVE BASIC WETTING PATTERNS

Lawns and Ground Covers, 1964, The Sunset Editorial Staff under the direction of Joseph F. Williamson, Garden Editor, Sunset Magazine

Wetting Pattern A: An Even Spread If You Overlap
Wetting Pattern B: You Make Successive Overlaps
Wetting Pattern C: Useful but Erratic; Very Common
Wetting Pattern D: Wide, Cone-Shaped...
Wetting Pattern E: The Fan Spray...

The five wetting patterns described on these pages pretty well represent the performance of portable sprinklers in general. The pattern your sprinkler makes will probably jibe with one of those we picture here. A study of the pattern should help you decide how to make the most efficient use of your sprinkler. Don't count on lateral water movement to correct poor sprinkler coverage.
