PICKING UP

Sarah Koenig

I dream of a ringing drain
a blue ring
the phone pool
put on hold
while I glide to touch the wall
I hold my breath
though the sign says no breath holding
I’ll hold till I turn blue
the sound is coming from somewhere
this waiting is not pleasurable
my breath holds me
I’m not picking up
until I reach
my best time

I thought of this poem while swimming. Being underwater can feel like an altered state. I love those scenes in movies where a character jumps into a pool and stays underwater a little too long, to avoid a situation or themselves—e.g. Bill Murray's jump off the diving board in Rushmore.
