CURTILAGE

Between a residence and the surrounding "open fields" lies the curtilage (see Figure 6.1 [right]). The curtilage is the area adjacent to a structure in which an individual has an expectation of privacy to which society is in agreement.... Sufficient showing as to the reliability of a cadaver dog for the detection of human remains must be made if the alert of that dog is going to be used as probable cause for the issuance of either an arrest or search warrant.
