RANK ORDER THE HAIRSTYLES SHOWN IN THIS FIGURE ACCORDING TO THEIR APPROPRIATENESS FOR A PROFESSIONAL OCCUPATION.

One last aspect of physical appearance that may play a role is hair and beards. An issue of the University of Florida Placement Manual reports the results of a survey among 114 college recruiting officers and managers determining which maile hairstyles and beart styles have the most positive effect on hiring decisions. The most favorable ratings were given the moderately short-haired, clean-shaven male. It seems reasonable to conclude that hair- and beart styles also influence the attribution of occupational status to the wearers.... Number 1 among hte males is similar to what was rated highest by recruiting officers, numbers 4 and 7 the lowest.
