TRANSITION TO PILLAGE AND BURN

__

The Church of Latter Day Saints encountered this problem. As mentioned in Chapter Two one of the Mormons' critical success factors is to build a database of genealogical information for all its members. This enormous and rapidly growing database is stored on a large mainframe in "batch" fashion—that is, the information stored in the database can only be accessed and updated through an intermittent, time-consuming programming process. But genealogical information tends to turn up in small pieces that can't be handled effectively by this process. So the Mornons turned to PCs.
